Beyond the visible — on intention and outcome

Beyond What Is Seen

I can't always show you the world from my window. Every once in a while, while I'm pouring out my troubles here, you get to watch my view. Otherwise, don't be fooled — I'm not all that eager to write. And to whom would I tell anything, anyway? Isn't everyone aware of everything already? You, for instance. Don't you know what's going on around you? Don't you see people flailing to reach their dreams? Don't you see how, with each flap, their wings keep striking your head, again and again? Don't you notice the change in yourself? You're becoming like that too, can't you feel it? Everyone is. Everyone has started to think success is possible only by stepping on one another. Don't you see? Don't any of you see?

We must write at length about the state of the person who can't see where they're going. Write at length so that, first, they might see their own blindness. How is the blind to see themselves, you ask? A person doesn't look at themselves with their eyes — that's why blindness wouldn't keep them from seeing. A person looks at themselves with their heart. As much as their heart holds, that much do they see of themselves. However much it's needed, today I have no strength left to describe wickedness. Let me, instead, give myself a little advice on what to do…

Don't believe what those whose eyes are blind think they see. The blinder a person is, the more certain they are of what they see. Don't forget!

Try to look, as far as you can, at what lies behind what is visible. Try to see that, above all. Behind what is visible there are two important things. One is the outcome; the other is the intention.

In everything that comes before you, in every promise made, every quarrel had, every deal struck, even in every lie told — catch the intention behind it. Ask yourself: why is this happening, why did this happen, what is the aim, what was the intention? Then try to see the outcome. Ask yourself again: what will happen now, what will change after this, what will I go through if this comes to pass, what will I lose, what will I gain? These two questions show you what lies beyond what is seen. And only then can you protect yourself from the blind.

Life is no joking matter, my friend. Life cannot be put off, either. In this world we live in for happiness, every unhappy moment is a waste — like food thrown into the trash. That's why we mustn't postpone. We have to flee from bad hearts. We have to keep our distance from anything that wears us down or saddens us.

In short, we have to hear the cry of the soul. We have to put an end to its swallowing itself into silence.

Don't forget! Every word of the soul is a blessing; the words of the body bring only ruin.
