The Importance of a Career Plan

I don't much like the word "career"; it always brings to mind projection screens, HR presentations, white-collar meetings. But disliking the word doesn't make the matter go away. Whatever we call it, there it is: the direction of the life a person puts effort into — where you want to be, what you want to learn, which prices you're willing to pay, what you'd never do. The lack of a plan sometimes looks like freedom; but in the long run it usually produces drift.

I don't see a career plan as nailing yourself to a single industry. A person can move through different fields — and sometimes should. But whichever fields they walk through, the spine has to be clear. Some people want money, some prestige, some a space to produce in, some movement, some quiet. First, a person has to tell themselves this honestly. What do I want? What can I tolerate, what can't I? Not every opportunity is a good opportunity. Sometimes a very shiny offer pulls a person off their axis.

A career plan is also time management. At a young age, everyone thinks they can do everything at the same time. But the rhythm of life doesn't allow that. Some seasons are for learning, some for becoming visible, some for quietly accumulating. If a person can't read these phases, they either rush or linger too long. Either tires you out. That's why, in a career, I believe sequencing is as important as intent. When should I be visible, when should I prepare, when should I take risks? These are valuable questions.

Making a plan also doesn't mean believing you'll control everything. Life will bring surprises. But a person with a plan is less thrown by them. Because they know where they want to return to. Knowing the route is one thing; knowing every turn is another. The wise ones in a career aren't those who memorize every turn, but those who don't lose their direction. To me, a good career isn't merely about rising; it's about being able to use your own capacity in the right place, at the right time, in the right work.
