Why Am I a Fenerbahçe Supporter?
I don't remember a moment when I chose to support Fenerbahçe, Istanbul's grand old football club. If you're a child of Kadıköy, the club's home district on Istanbul's Asian shore — and especially if you grew up around Moda — the chants reach your ears before you even know what they are; the colors catch your eye on the way home; on match day the rhythm of the neighborhood shifts, and you grow up inside that rhythm. Fenerbahçe was never something I chose from the outside; it seeped into me like an atmosphere. It came with the spirit of the neighborhood, the rhythm of the city, the memory. Football is the part that was added later.
But belonging isn't completed only by being born. As you grow up, you also start to think about why you're attached. For me, the strongest side of Fenerbahçe is that it's not a club only spoken of when it wins. Being a great club is one thing; producing great character is another. Fenerbahçe matters to me partly for that reason. Because there's resistance in this story as much as success. Sometimes it tells itself through joy, sometimes through standing up against injustice, sometimes through the memory of a great community. Here, being a supporter ceases to be a mere matter of following the score.
Truly attaching yourself to a club means carrying not only its trophies but its story. Colors alone aren't enough; you have to know what those colors have come to stand for over the years. One of the things I love about Fenerbahçe is the relationship this belonging has with the city. The smell of the sea, the ferries, the area around the stadium, the walk on match day, the sounds that linger from your childhood — when all of these come together, the club stops being something just for the stands; it becomes a feeling that soaks into life.
Becoming a member of the club's General Assembly took on its meaning right there for me. It never felt to me like a mere official title. It felt more like the institutional answer to a belonging that had been inside me since childhood. Sometimes a person comes to own certain bonds not at the time, but years later, with greater awareness. My Fenerbahçe identity is a little like that. To put it briefly: I don't just support a team. I claim the memory of a neighborhood, a feeling from childhood, and one of the most genuine belongings of my own life.
